You Can Install a Small Solar System

Installing solar power on your whole home is a job for a professional, but what if you want to light up an RV or a shed? You can install a small-scale solar power system to make your home more comfortable and efficient.

Whether you purchase a kit or select individual components, all systems include solar panels, a charge controller, a battery and various wiring and cables. This will provide direct current, or DC power, like you have in your car.

If you add an inverter, you'll get alternating current (AC) power like you have in your home. You'll be able to plug in items with a standard AC plug.

Remember to size your system for the amount of power you'll need. A 200-watt system, for example, provides enough power to operate a shed's lights, a fan, battery-operated tools and lawn-equipment. Remember to always use proper safety precautions and follow manufacturer instructions when working with a solar power system.

Install the panels. Ideally, panels should face south, but east and west will generate power, too. North-facing panels won't generate much power, nor will shaded panels. Install the system starting with the panels. Since systems may differ, follow all manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols.

Run the wires. Drill a hole in the soffit of the shed or some other appropriate location to run the wires inside.

Set up components. Pull the wires inside the charge controller. It's best to install the controller, battery and inverter close together to minimize wire runs between them.

Connect components. First, wire positive and negative wires from the panels into the controller. Then, hook up the positive and negative wires from the controller to the battery. Next, wire the positive and negative on the battery to the positive and negative on the inverter. Finally, connect the wires from each panel — positive to positive and negative to negative. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Test and confirm power. Finish by plugging in a device, like a light, and trying it out. Also, look at the display on the charge controller to make sure the panels are feeding power to the system.

Now, your lawn tools can be charged with clean energy from the sun. Plus, you have extra power to tackle projects around the house. With a portable power station, you can even use it during a power outage or take it with you on outdoor adventures.

Solar power is more convenient and affordable than ever. You can install solar power to make your home more comfortable and efficient.
